December Updates

Good Afternoon Families,
I want to thank all the families and students for the variety of donations we have received this year for various endeavors. As you may recall from a previous email the students sent over 600 items to the local food pantry, donated over 600 dollars’ worth of gift cards and kindness ideas for our Festival of Trees and lastly our donation bin for toys for Wilmington Children through the Wilmington Fire Department is filled! It is wonderful to be around such caring families and students. Around this time of year, it is nice to encourage and notice the 3 R's at the Shawsheen School (respect, responsibility and resilience).
This week on Friday we will be having an All School Meeting and instead of wearing our Shawsheen shirts we are encouraging students to wear their favorite pajamas or comfy clothes. During our meeting we are going to do silent sustained reading together in the cafeteria as a group. Your child may bring in a favorite book from home, magazine, or book from the classroom.
Just a reminder that Friday is a full day of school. School will resume on January 2nd.
Lastly, I just want to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and Happy New Year.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in the New Year!

Happy Snow Day and Updates

Good Morning,

I hope everyone is enjoying some quiet time at home with family as we are all snowed in! I wanted to send out a few updates for this week since our timelines have changed a little bit. Report cards were suppose to go out on Wednesday. Due to the two snow days, the report cards will now go out on Friday. Conferences will still resume on Thursday and the students will have an early release day. Just a reminder that no lunches will be served and dismissal is at noon. If your child is going home by a different means of transportation, please send in a note. Also, it is important that all guardians entering the building for a conference go through the front door. All doors will be locked as we still have CARES in the building. We also ask that you go out the front door as well to maintain safety. Thank you so much for helping with this.

Also, just a reminder that the Shawsheen Tree this year is called "Handing our Kindness" and is full of over 500 dollars worth of gift cards. The students also created fingerprints for the skirt of the tree. Look on twitter for a picture or go and check it out this weekend at the Festival of Trees.

We are also a collection spot in support of the Wilmington Firefighters for donations for Wilmington Children. Please feel free to send in any toy or donation (new) to the school for the bin or parents are welcome to drop off during parent/teacher conferences on Thursday.

Thank you and enjoy the rest of your day,

Mrs. King
Principal

November Updates

Good Afternoon Families,

The students and staff have had a very successful November. Although it is one of our busiest months the students all participated in many enrichment/field trip opportunities.

We had our PAC holiday fair on November 2nd, which was very successful. Thank you to all the families who attended and the PAC for volunteering to continue this tradition.

Our professional development day was also a big success and staff really had time to engage in different learning opportunities.

Our first graders had Star Lab come from the Museum of Science and they had a blast going inside the domes to see the constellations.

For Veterans Day many of our students contributed pages with notes on a veteran in their life with photos. It filled the wall with pictures. Check the local town crier for a photo! Also, we have created a book for students to look through or take out from the library of all the pictures.

The week of the 18th our grade 3 classrooms went to the Commonwealth Museum and learned all about rights through Massachusetts history. It was a great trip and the students learned a lot.  Next week the second graders will be going on the Plimoth Plantation trip on Monday, rain or shine! Please make sure students are dressed appropriately, have a bagged lunch and snack labeled. Pick up will be at 4:15 at the school.

On Tuesday, we will be having our ALL School Meeting and students are encouraged to wear their Shawsheen shirts or blue and white. At the ALL School Meeting we will be presenting on kindness. Included in this will be an update from our student leaders on the 400 food items donated and sorted for the Wilmington Food Pantry that will be dropped off tomorrow. Thank you to Mr. Welch and Mrs. Jewett for organizing this! In addition, we will talk about our tree for the Festival of Trees called Handing out Kindness. On the tree will be hands with acts of kindness written on them, the skirt of the tree will have each students finger print on it and the tree will be filled with gift cards and donations to pass the kindness on to someone else. Thank you to all the families who help to bring in food donations and tree donations.

It has been a tradition that each year as a school and as a district we help out the Wilmington Fire Department by housing a Box for Toys For Wilmington Children. We are starting to collect those donations. Please feel free to have your child drop off a toy or during open house on December 5th, you are welcome to bring in a donation.

Just a reminder that we have no school on Wednesday!

I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your time with your families.

Mrs. King

Festival of Trees 2019

Dear Shawsheen Families,

As the holiday season approaches we are continuing our tradition of having a Shawsheen Elementary Tree at the Wilmington Festival of Trees! Proceeds support WOW (We’re One Wilmington) and all they do for our students and families. The festival is being held Saturday, December 7th and Sunday, December 8th 2019. Here is a link with more information:  http://onewilmington.org/events/festival-of-trees/.

This year the theme of our tree will be Acts of Kindness. The PAC has generously donated a tree & lights.  As a school, we would like to collect monetary donations and/or gift cards for the tree. Donations are completely voluntary; families only donate if they wish to. We will have students think of kind acts that go along with the gift cards we receive. Regardless of what we receive, the tree will be from the entire Shawsheen School.

You are welcome to contribute in one of two ways:
1.     Buying a gift card that can be used as an act of kindness. We have included a list of ideas below, but feel free to come up with your own!
2.     Making a monetary donation toward a larger gift. We are suggesting monetary donations in the $5.00 range (again, this is strictly optional).
Please send any donations to Shawsheen Elementary in an envelope labeled Festival of Trees by Monday, November 25th so we have enough time to put everything together.

Thank you for your generosity and kindness!

With Appreciation,

The Shawsheen Festival of Trees Committee

October Updates :)

Good Morning Families,

We have had a very busy month so far. The third grade students went to the Middlesex Canal Field trip last week and they had the Owl enrichment program yesterday. The presenters have just released a new book called Owling and will send out a notice if any students would like to buy a copy and have it signed. Stay tuned for that letter. As a school we have had our Author Visit, Corey the Dribbler, Bus Safety and tomorrow we are having Fire Safety. The students did an incredible job with all of our enrichment programs by using our 3 R's.

Next week on Monday we will have our October All School Meeting. We will be talking about our Shawsheen leaders first community service project and reviewing lunchroom expectations on earning the pawsome picnic grounds. Students are all encouraged to wear their Shawsheen Shirts. Also, we have lots of lost and found clothes already piling up in the cafeteria. I have had students go through them for the past week. If your child is missing anything, feel free to come and take a look before or after school. At the end of the month we will be donating them.

We have Picture day coming up on the 29th and on the 31st we will have the annual WEF walk at 2:15. Students are welcome to bring in costumes or wear orange/black. All students will participate regardless of costumes. We ask no face paint or masks for the day. A letter from WEF is going home in the next day or so. We will walk around the building for about 20 minutes and families are welcome to walk with us or watch from the parking lot.

On November 2nd is the Winter Wonderland that is put on by our amazing PAC. This is a great event for families and one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. The PAC is still looking for donations for the bake sale and volunteers for any portion of the day. They have over 40 vendors coming and will have lots of raffles and a store were children can buy gifts for family members.

Please note on the calendar that we have NO school on November 5th for a staff professional development day.

We will also be doing a tree this year from the Shawsheen School for the Festival of Trees. We are still deciding on a theme so stay tuned!

October Updates

Good Morning Families,

We have some updates to remind families of. First we had an amazing enrichment program from Corey the Dribbler who went over our 3 R's and had a blast while doing it. See pictures on twitter @shawsheenschool!  We also had our first All School Meeting where we discussed bathroom behavior, hallway behavior and recess behavior. The students were excellent for our first meeting. Shawsheen shirts have been ordered for all first graders and new students. Also, if you ordered an extra one and returned the order form those should also be in soon.

On Monday, it is national Stomp out Bullying Day. All students are encouraged to wear blue to support this initiative. At the elementary level we are focusing on kindness and inclusiveness. We kicked it off by having Corey The Dribbler come in and on Tuesday we have the Author visiting to share her story about her determined dog.

In addition to the upcoming dates listed and sent home last week we have added vision and hearing for the month of October, fire safety and the WEF walk. More information will be sent out regarding this.

In addition, I am happy to announce that we have a long term substitute hired for Art to replace Mrs. Mock temporarily when she begins her leave of absence. Her name is Mrs. Rebecca Wolfe and she is a certified Art teacher with some great experiences. She has done long term subbing in other districts and will be a great fit for our students during this time. We are very excited to have her on board.

Lastly, I want to thank my school council from last year Mrs. Flaherty, Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. Toth (community member), Mrs. Fitzgerald (parent),  and Mrs. Najarian (parent) for helping to formulate our new school improvement goals. Our new goals will be presented on Oct. 9th at school committee if you would like to tune into WCTV or attend. In addition, I have them here below for families to look at to see some of our school focus points. Our new school council members will begin meeting in October and will be notified later today via email. Thank you to all families who sent in a letter to be part of the council.

October Updates!

Dear Families,

I can't believe the first month of school is almost completed. The students have adjusted very well to the first month. The procedures for a.m arrival and p.m arrival have been going great. Thank you! Also, buses seem to on track with pick up and drop off, so everything is falling into place. Thank you to families who attended open house a few weeks ago. I know that parking was very difficult this year and I am going to see about making sure that next year there are no field events taking place to support open house evening.

On Monday, September 30th we are having our first All School Meeting at 9:05. Students may wear their Shawsheen T-shirts or blue and white spirit wear.  We will be going over our 3 R's or respect, responsibility and resilience specifically focusing on the Paws being handed out, the bathrooms, lunch and recess areas. Thank you to our PBIS team made up of teachers, a parent, CARES staff, and shawsheen staff for all the dedication to continuing to make PBIS grow. As you are aware, classrooms who earn the most Paws at lunches get to have a picnic lunch on the Pawsome Picnic Grounds stage on Mondays. In addition, classrooms who earn the most stars for following the 3 R's in specialist earn the Golden Award for their classroom for the week. Our newest initiative this year is that we collect the paws in the office that the students earned all week and pick one paw out at on Friday. The teacher whose name is on the paw and the student is the winner. The prize is that the student gets to pick a brand new book for the teacher and dedicate it to the teacher or staff member from them for being Pawsome! We are so excited about this for both the students and staff. As you may be aware students also come home with a Paw when they earn one so be sure to ask them Why They Were Pawsome!

For the Month of October we have lots of fun things planned for students. Some families may be aware that October 7th is Stomp Out Bullying day nationwide. In support of this for the month of October, instead of doing one day focusing on this we are incorporating different enrichment programs focusing on kindness, inclusiveness, differences and being your best self. Included in this is Corey the Dribbler https://www.academicentertainment.com/dribbler on Oct. 3rd and our Author Visit on Oct. 8th https://www.ivysbook.com/. We are encouraging students and staff to wear blue on October 7th or their Shawsheen Shirts. We will also be having the WEF walk on Halloween day and more information will be forthcoming.

Shawsheen shirts have been ordered for all first graders, new enrollments and any students who wanted an extra one and submitted the form.

Please feel free to check upcoming dates that was sent out and attached to this form. Also, all notices are always added onto the Principal Blog and posted if you need reminders.  If you go to the blog https://shawsheenschool.blogspot.com/ you can add your email to get automatic updates sent to you. In addition, you can follow the shawsheen school on twitter. Lisa King

Thank you for all you do to support our students and have a great weekend,

Mrs. King

Seeking School Council Members 2019-2020

Wilmington Public Schools
Shawsheen Elementary School
298 Shawsheen Ave

Dear Parent and Guardians:

The Massachusetts Education Reform Act provides an opportunity for parents, teachers, and administrators to work together on a School Advisory Council.  Some of the main areas of responsibility for school advisory councils have included adopting educational goals, identifying the educational needs of students, reviewing the annual building budget, revising student handbooks, and creating a school improvement plan.

At this time I am asking for your interest in serving on the council for this school year 2019-2020. In order to create parity, the number of parents serving on the council will be equal to the number of teachers and administrators who will serve. I am looking for two parents or guardians at this time.

For your information, the School Advisory Council meetings are conducted once a month after school. Meetings start at 3:00 p.m. Members are typically asked to serve a two-year term. If you are interested, please send me a letter of interest via email or mail and I will get back to you.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Lisa King
Principal
