May News and Upcoming Dates

Dear Families,

Next week is teacher appreciation week. Our PAC is sponsoring a luncheon on Friday and we are so thankful for that and appreciative of all our families do for us.

We have a very busy schedule in the upcoming 6 weeks with field trips, special days at schools, field days, concerts and projects. Please be sure to double check with your classroom teacher if you are unsure on anything specific related to your child's classroom for projects or field trips.

With the nice weather approaching, (hopefully) we are still in need of small water bottles for the students. We like to stock up in the nurses office and the main office. This will also help us out in the fall. Please feel free to drop off water bottles at car rider or bring them to the main office.

This week we have grade 3 Math MCAS taking place. This will be from Monday-Thursday and you should have your individual class schedules for that from your teacher. Friday will be a 1/2 day for our C.I.T day. Students will be dismissed at 12:00 and no lunches will be served. As always if your child is going home by a different means of transportation that day then we will need a note.

We will be having Island day again this year on June 11th. It has been a tradition for students and staff. We are ordering leis this year through the PAC for all students. It will take place after lunches and we will be sending out a letter to describe the day as we have in years past.

Just to make parents aware we are going down to five first grade classrooms next year due to enrollment and we will maintain the same amount of classrooms for second and third grade. In addition, Mrs. Lauren Cameron will be teaching third grade and Ms. Sadowski will be teaching second grade next year.

Whose Child is This?

Author Unknown
"Whose child is this?" I asked one day
Seeing a little one out at play
"Mine", said the parent with a tender smile
"Mine to keep a little while
To bathe his hands and comb his hair
To tell him what he is to wear
To prepare him that he may always be good
And each day do the things he should"

"Whose child is this?" I asked again
As the door opened and someone came in
"Mine", said the teacher with the same tender smile
"Mine, to keep just for a little while
To teach him how to be gentle and kind
To train and direct his dear little mind
To help him live by every rule
And get the best he can from school"

"Whose child is this?" I ask once more
Just as the little one entered the door
"Ours" said the parent and the teacher as they smiled
And each took the hand of the little child
"Ours to love and train together
Ours this blessed task forever."

WHAM walk reminder

Wilmington Public Schools

Joins the 7th Every Kid Healthy Celebration Week

Tomorrow at 2:10-2:40 we will be walking around the outside of the building for 30 minutes. Parents are welcome to join in on the walk or watch from the parking lot.

The Every Kid Healthy national movement celebration promotes and reinforces the WPS beliefs in healthy eating, physical activity, nutrition education and physical education for academic success.
During this week long celebration all students will participate in W.H.A.M. Wilmington Healthy Actively Moving walk at their school.  Each school will schedule the W.H.A.M. walk for thirty minutes of physical activity.  The walking will demonstrate the importance of 60 minutes of daily physical activity for health and wellness.
All children will participate in the W.H.A.M. walk with classmates, teachers and family.

First Grade Orientation

 Dear Kindergarten Parent/Guardian:

Historically, the Shawsheen Elementary School has hosted an orientation for parents of incoming first grade students to provide you with some information about the school, your child’s schedule, and answers to questions that I am sure many of you have, especially if your child is new to our school system. We have decided to conduct the orientation before the end of the school year, rather than during the summer, since so many parents are away on vacation during the summer months.

Therefore, you are cordially invited to attend the orientation on Wednesday, May 22nd 2019, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.  The program will take place in the Shawsheen Elementary School cafeteria.  I am asking that only parents attend this event since it will include a presentation of information pertinent to parents as well as a time for questions and answers. The children will have an opportunity to visit the Shawsheen for Move-up Day on the morning of May 22nd.  In the fall you will have another opportunity to view the school at Parent/Teacher Orientation and your child’s classroom.

If you would like to begin to get acquainted to some happenings at the Shawsheen you may join our Twitter handle @shawheenschool and view the Principal Blog at https://shawsheenschool.blogspot.com/

I am looking forward to meeting with you at the first grade parent orientation on May 22nd.

Sincerely,

Lisa King
Principal

April Updates

Good Morning Families,

One day away from a much deserved April break. To gear up for our spring sports seasons tomorrow will be Sports Day. Students can feel free to wear their favorite team, colors or hats. Looking forward to a great day tomorrow to kick off vacation.

Just a reminder that the STEM fair is this evening. I hope to see students and families there. It is always a fun district event.

MCAS testing for ELA is finishing up this week. The students and staff worked tremendously on preparing for this assessment and did a nice job utilizing the computers for the first time.
The math MCAS will be in May.

Lastly, if any families need assistance with summer camps or support please feel free to contact me directly and I can help to guide you. In addition, we have many projects coming up and if families need support with supplies, please let me know as well.

Waters Please

Good Morning,

We had so many amazing donations of bottled waters at the beginning of the year. We are currently all out. We like to keep these in the main office  and nurses office for students if they need any. With the spring weather approaching we are kindly asking for any donations. All donations can go to the office.

Thanks so much,

Mrs. King

April Updates

Happy April Families,

We have a very busy month coming up. The weather looks like it is getting nicer out each day so the students will be enjoying more outdoor recess time including the playground and the fields. Coming up this week is MCAS practice tests for grade level. As you are all aware, the grade 3 is now taking the MCAS test online this year. We have everything in order to make this process successful. Next week we will be officially testing. Please be sure to review the MCAS letter that was sent out previously for information. Also this week the second graders will have the Dig Into Dinosaurs program on Tuesday and Thursday. This is a great program that they love every year and goes along nicely with their Dinosaur projects.

On Friday the PAC will be hosting the Ice Cream Social and the Ice Cream is being sponsored by the Wilmington Sons of Italy! The times are from 6-8 and there will be lots of raffle options. Please check the times that have been sent out as when to come (it gets crowded) and we look forward to seeing lots of families there.

Also, we have a Cradles to Crayons box that a student from WHS is promoting. We are collecting any gently used clothes and any pajamas or socks (only new).  We also have a bin outside for Ipods for Wounded Veterans. They are collecting any type of games to send to Veterans such as poker chips, word searches, highlighters, connect four, etc.
