October Updates

Good Afternoon Families,

As we are approaching October we have many upcoming events and exciting things happening in the school.

Safety- The students did a terrific job with their first fire drill. They will be practicing an evacuation drill and an upcoming Alice drill in the month of October or early November. The Alice book and protocol is posted on the district webpages and there is a link on the principal’s blog for the resource book.

Curriculum-First and second grade teachers are continuing with Fundations for early literacy skills. The students have completed their first unit tests. Fundations is done every day for about 30 minutes. Fundations helps with phonic skills, writing and formation of letters. All grade levels are implementing reader’s workshop and students are involved in mini lessons and sustained reading time. First and Third grade teachers who are in their second year of implementation are working on conferring with students and the text that they are reading. Envisions math is going strong. Students are on Unit 2 of the Envisions program. Teachers are utilizing the projectors for videos and you will be receiving shortly the username and pass codes to log in to Envisions for the online tools. This year teachers are piloting one large unit per grade level on science during the year. In addition they will continue with the science and technology standards for lessons and units of study. This year we ordered National Geographic Magazines for all students so that they would have access to more nonfiction materials. Lastly, students will have completed their beginning of the year benchmarks within the next few weeks.

Technology-We now have 3 Chrome book carts in the building for teachers to sign out and utilize with students. We also have 2 Tablet carts for teachers to sign out. Many teachers utilize these to complete projects, access google documents, take online math tests and much more. It is exciting to see what the students continually accomplish with this technology. In addition, we have a maker space cart that was awarded to our librarian through the Wilmington Education Fundation spring grant. All students will have an opportunity to experience this throughout the year. Lastly, teachers will go over access to programs the district has continued to purchase such as Reading Eggs and Study Island. These programs are helpful for additional supports at home with early literacy and math skills.

PBIS-Our Positive Behavior and Intervention team has met and we are well on our way to implementation of PBIS. We have created a behavior matrix that was shared with the staff and the school council team last year.  Everything will revolve around focusing on the three R's (respect, resilience and responsibility). We will be teaching and introducing the students to these words at our first All School Meeting this Thursday. All School Meeting is a time when the entire school gets together to share out and talk about important messages. We will also be talking about Kindness Week. In addition, we have purchased T-Shirts for all staff and students that have the three R's on them and Shawsheen School. Thank you to the PAC for the first grade purchase. We are hoping that this will be a great way to show unity for our school and start wearing them on All School Meeting days. The shirts should be in within a week or so.

Kindness Week- National Stomp out Bullying Day is Monday, October 2nd. We decided that we will have a kindness week where each day we will involve students in different activities. On Monday, we are asking that all students wear blue to show unity for stomping out bullying.  For more information on this here is the link http://stompoutbullying.org/.  Thank you to Lisa Gibbs our guidance counselor and Alena Krystofolski our health teacher for putting these great ideas and activities into action.

Upcoming Dates and News

Good Afternoon,

The students and staff have had a great start to the school year. The weather has been cooperating and the classroom temperatures have been manageable. Teachers and students have dived right into the curriculum and have begun Readers Workshop, Fundations, and Envisions. The students are engaged in picking just right books and doing sustained independent and quiet reading time. They are adjusting well to their new schedules whether it is a different lunch time or recess time. Recess times this year have been to altered to explore trying a different time to break up parts of the day instead of directly after or before lunch. This also helps with maintaining uninterrupted ELA blocks. So far the students have done really well with this change.

Bus and car rider procedures are going very well also. Students are exiting the cars efficiently and walking along the lines. We really appreciate everyone helping out in the a.m with these procedures. In addition, afternoon car rider is going well. Just a reminder to use the crosswalk if students are parked by the playground.

Below are some upcoming dates. Please note that these may be updated with more events but we wanted to give families a glimpse of what we have booked.

Hurricane Harvey Support

Dear parents/guardians:

The Wilmington Public Schools would like to help support the victims of Hurricane Harvey.  One of our principals has a connection to the Katy, Texas school system.  The schools in that district have set up Amazon sites for those who would like to help the schools.  If you wish, just click on the link below and follow the instructions for supporting the school of your choice.

Thank you for your consideration,

Lisa King
