Early Release Day Reminder

Good Afternoon Shawsheen Families,

I wanted to send a reminder that Friday, December 23, 2016 is an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 12:00. There is NO afternoon CARES and no lunches will be served. Also, the school will be closed for winter vacation through Monday, January 2, 2017. School will resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

Also, we are trying to replenish our indoor recess board games, cards and lego selection within many of our classrooms. If you happen to have any gently used or new indoor recess games, we will be collecting them after winter break until the second week of January. Please bring them to the main office and we will distribute them.

Thank you and have a great week!

Morning Car Rider Procedures

Good Afternoon,

I just wanted to remind families about our drop off procedures in the mornings. Recently, we have had an increase in the amount of cars dropping off and in order to make this an efficient process we encourage families to do the following:

* When dropping off, utilize the two row system. We have a crossing guard on duty from 8:30-8:55 a.m and she is there to be sure the students proceed safely along the crosswalk.

* Your child can get out of the car even if you are 2-3 cars back on either side and walk down the yellow line to the crossing guard and then proceed onto the white crosswalk. This will help with exiting and moving the cars along.

* If you would like to walk your child to the door, you must park in the lot and walk up to the crossing guard and utilize the crosswalk.

* Lastly, any preparation you can do ahead of time to ensure that your child can exit the car efficiently will help move things along.

As always when the buses arrive we do our best to hold up the car riders to let the students get off the buses. No cars are allowed to pass a bus or are allowed to go around it when the lights are flashing or the students are exiting the buses. An administrator is on duty outside to help facilitate this daily.

Thank you all for helping to make his process work more smoothly,

Mrs. King

December Updates

Good Morning,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and holiday break. We had been very busy filling our Thankful Turkeys and this month we will be working on kindness reindeer. Teachers will be adding antlers to the school reindeer when catching students doing kind-full acts. The students have also helped to decorate the Shawsheen Tree for the Festival of Tress this weekend by writing their favorite book or message on the tree.

Coming up in the next week is our parent/teacher conferences on December 8th which is an early release day. All doors will be locked on this day as our CARES program is still going on. Please be sure to use the front door when entering and exiting the building.

Our Shawsheen leaders club has been busy organizing all the lost and found items which are now located on the stage. They have also delivered any clothing with names on it to students or classrooms. Please take a look on the blog for any items that may look familiar. We will be donating the items in the next few weeks if not claimed.

Lastly, we have a Toys for Wilmington Children bin outside the office organized by the Wilmington Fire Department. Students can bring in unwrapped toys or donations up until December 12th.  During parent/teacher conferences would also be a great time to bring these items in. In addition to all the other events we have our second grade concert on December 15th. More information will be sent out to second grade families. We have many events and dates coming up in December, please view the upcoming dates below. You can also view the Shawsheen calendar on our website for events and the Principal's blog for any updates.

Holiday Fair Tomorrow At the Shawsheen

November Updates

Happy November,

Thank you to all the parents for your continued efforts in making the Shawsheen a great place. I have noticed lots of volunteers in the building helping out in the computer lab, library and supporting our PAC fundraisers. This month according to our Whoos reading through the PAC the students have read a total of 55,916 minutes. That is great!

Some other exciting news is that beginning in November, our new Shawsheen student leaders group will get started with grade three student volunteers. This is taking place of student council and all students were invited to participate. We are also going to be doing a Mock Election on Monday for all students. The purpose of this is to give them an opportunity to experience the voting process.

Tuesday is a Professional Development day and NO School for students. On Thursday we will be having an All School Meeting where we will revisit recess/playground rules and share student work around Veterans Day. Friday is no school in honor of Veterans Day.

Today we also had a practice evacuation drill and it went great. Students followed all the appropriate procedures and listened to their teachers and staff. We will be scheduling an ALICE practice drill for later in November.

Upcoming Dates:

11/5-PAC holiday fair
11/7-mock election at school
11/8-no school (PD day for staff)
11/9-Harlem Superstars will visit Shawsheen and also hold an evening event at the high school.
11/10-all school meeting
11/11-no school Veterans Day
11/21-Second grade field trip
11/23-early release day
11/24-Thanksgiving Break

Thanks for all you do and have a great month,

Mrs. King

Halloween Parade

Good Afternoon,

Many of the students are excited to show off their Halloween costumes this year! Students are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes or black and orange.
We will be allowing all students to participate in our Costume Parade at the end of the day on Monday, October 31st. Students and teachers will have an opportunity to wear their costumes and will walk through  B-level and the gymnasium. We are going to have students sitting outside of their classrooms as other grade levels parade by until their turn. We did this when the visiting seniors came at the end of last year and it was a big hit. This will take place at 2:00 in the afternoon on Monday.
Unfortunately, due to space issues, parents will not be able to attend.

All costumes must be school appropriate. No masks, nor full face paint are permitted.
Additionally, artificial weapons are NOT allowed.

Please pack costumes in a bag and labeled.

We hope everyone has a safe and fun Trick or Treating adventure on Monday evening.
Sincerely.

October News

Good Afternoon to Families,

We have had a very successful opening to the school year. Students are adjusting well entering their new grade. Teachers will be continuing exploring the implementation of readers workshop in grades 1 and 3. In grade 2, teachers are implementing the Fundations program. So far, teachers have been excited about these approaches and students as well. Students in grades 1 and 3 are working on stamina during reading and focusing on mini lessons on how to be better readers. Soon the PAC will be doing a reading online fundraiser that will help to both get students excited about reading at home and help to fund some enrichment and PAC supported purchases. More information will be sent out for that soon. Also, we had our first all school meeting this week in the cafeteria. All students and staff gathered and we discussed our school norms and growth mindset. The students did great and we will continue this monthly. Please see some upcoming dates for the month of October and check the principal blog and twitter feed for frequent school updates.

If you did not sign up and you would like to come, please send an email to my secretary karen.oreilly@wpsk12.com.  I hope to see families there, please save the date.  The topic on Tuesday is called Parents as Educators. FIELD DAY INFORMATION

Dear Parents,
Our annual Field Days are scheduled for Monday, June 6 (grade 3), Tuesday, June 7 (grade 2) and Wednesday, June 8 (grade 1), with rain dates on Thursday, June 9 and Friday, June 10 as needed.  Let’s hope the weather cooperates!
Field Day will be taking place on the outside playing fields and tennis courts. Please have your children wear sneakers and dress for the weather. Please do NOT send your child to school wearing sandals, flip flops or “Crocks”, as there are many high energy games in which appropriate footwear is needed.  There will be a few activities in which the children may get wet, so they are welcome to wear bathing suits and are encouraged to bring a COMPLETE change of clothes and a towel.  Items HIGHLY recommended for Field Day:
-SNEAKERS                            -SWIMSUIT OR OLD PLAY CLOTHES
-SUNSCREEN & HAT                -COMPLETE CHANGE OF CLOTHES
    -TOWEL                                            -WATER BOTTLE
Non-toxic “tattoos” will be one activity offered;  if you DO NOT want your child involved in this activity, please fill out the form at the bottom of this page and return it to your child’s teacher.  If we do not hear from you, we will assume that your child MAY have a tattoo put on his/her arm/leg or hand.
Finally, if you are interested in helping out with Field Day, please fill out the form below and return it to the Shawsheen School.  Most help is needed for the morning activities, but we will also need volunteers for the scavenger hunt held after lunch. Remember, it has been the overwhelming support of the parent volunteers that has made Field Day so successful in the past.  If you are interested in volunteering, I will send you another more detailed letter explaining the day after receiving your reply.
Thank you!

May Updates

Dear Families,

I can't believe it is already May! We have had such a busy month and we have more events happening this month. Many of the grade levels have secured their spring field trips and teachers are preparing students for these special days. If you are selected as a volunteer, please be sure to come into the office and fill out a CORI form.

As a school we have continued discussing Growth Mindset  and the entire school will gather together again on Wednesday for another all school meeting. We will review our school norms/expectations and discuss some more examples of being your best self. In addition, the students will be surprised with a new school song developed by many of their ideas during music class with Mrs. Rene. Please keep this a secret until Wednesday!

We have many events in May coming up for parents. One event is being held on May 12th called the Behavioral Health Fair. The superintendent sent out information on this in her most recent blog posting. Childcare will be provided and it is an amazing chance to select and sit in on workshops ranging on varied topics relating to mental health.

In addition to this event, on May 24th and May 31st, Theresa Wiggins from Village parenting will be here to present to families. It is two separate workshops and you can choose to come to one or both. These workshops were provided by the Curriculum grant on Mindfulness that I wrote earlier this year. We are so fortunate to be able to have these workshops here at the school. Childcare will also be provided. The workshops were based on the parent survey that went out including the times that best worked for families and other considerations. A notice will be going home next week if you wish to sign up. I hope to see families there, please save the date.  Topics will  include Intentional Parenting and Parents as Educators.

Lastly, Math MCAS is happening in May for Grade 3 students. This will occur on Tuesday, May 17th and Wednesday, May 18th. The test should take approximately 60 minutes, however students have as long as they need to complete the test. Snacks will be provided and a reminder will be sent out the evening before.

On the blog, I have many upcoming dates posted and information on the placement process. Also on the blog is more information on the Parent workshops that will take place in May.

Have a wonderful month!

Placement Process

Dear Parents:

It is difficult to believe that spring has arrived and we have begun the final term of this school year.  As we approach the end of this school year, we will be thinking about the new school year and the classroom placement of students for next year.  This letter is a brief overview of the placement process and some of the criteria that we take into consideration.

The Shawsheen School administration, grade level teaching teams and support staff will meet to discuss student assignments.  The intent of these meetings is to thoroughly consider all of the criteria to insure that the new assignments will be both a positive and rewarding educational experience for both students and staff.  We also strive to create classes that are well balanced with groups of children who can work together educationally and socially.

First, we consider the make-up of the staff assigned at each grade level.  Then, we take the following factors into consideration.

  • Individual learning styles, strengths, talents
  • Male/female distribution
  • Classroom size
  • Peer relations
  • Social and emotional development
  • Students with Individualized Educational Plans
  • Students designated for additional reading support
  • Students with additional academic needs
  • Teacher recommendation
  • The need for a diverse classroom population
The placement process begins in May and continues for about 6 weeks. The teachers work on this during grade level meetings and our C.I.T day. There are about 3 phases to this process and the school prides itself in doing a thorough job in the best interest of each child.

Thank you for your support with this process and if you have any questions or concerns please let me know,

Mrs. King
Principal
