November Updates

Good Afternoon Families,

The students and staff have had a very successful November. Although it is one of our busiest months the students all participated in many enrichment/field trip opportunities.

We had our PAC holiday fair on November 2nd, which was very successful. Thank you to all the families who attended and the PAC for volunteering to continue this tradition.

Our professional development day was also a big success and staff really had time to engage in different learning opportunities.

Our first graders had Star Lab come from the Museum of Science and they had a blast going inside the domes to see the constellations.

For Veterans Day many of our students contributed pages with notes on a veteran in their life with photos. It filled the wall with pictures. Check the local town crier for a photo! Also, we have created a book for students to look through or take out from the library of all the pictures.

The week of the 18th our grade 3 classrooms went to the Commonwealth Museum and learned all about rights through Massachusetts history. It was a great trip and the students learned a lot.  Next week the second graders will be going on the Plimoth Plantation trip on Monday, rain or shine! Please make sure students are dressed appropriately, have a bagged lunch and snack labeled. Pick up will be at 4:15 at the school.

On Tuesday, we will be having our ALL School Meeting and students are encouraged to wear their Shawsheen shirts or blue and white. At the ALL School Meeting we will be presenting on kindness. Included in this will be an update from our student leaders on the 400 food items donated and sorted for the Wilmington Food Pantry that will be dropped off tomorrow. Thank you to Mr. Welch and Mrs. Jewett for organizing this! In addition, we will talk about our tree for the Festival of Trees called Handing out Kindness. On the tree will be hands with acts of kindness written on them, the skirt of the tree will have each students finger print on it and the tree will be filled with gift cards and donations to pass the kindness on to someone else. Thank you to all the families who help to bring in food donations and tree donations.

It has been a tradition that each year as a school and as a district we help out the Wilmington Fire Department by housing a Box for Toys For Wilmington Children. We are starting to collect those donations. Please feel free to have your child drop off a toy or during open house on December 5th, you are welcome to bring in a donation.

Just a reminder that we have no school on Wednesday!

I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your time with your families.

Mrs. King

Festival of Trees 2019

Dear Shawsheen Families,

As the holiday season approaches we are continuing our tradition of having a Shawsheen Elementary Tree at the Wilmington Festival of Trees! Proceeds support WOW (We’re One Wilmington) and all they do for our students and families. The festival is being held Saturday, December 7th and Sunday, December 8th 2019. Here is a link with more information:  http://onewilmington.org/events/festival-of-trees/.

This year the theme of our tree will be Acts of Kindness. The PAC has generously donated a tree & lights.  As a school, we would like to collect monetary donations and/or gift cards for the tree. Donations are completely voluntary; families only donate if they wish to. We will have students think of kind acts that go along with the gift cards we receive. Regardless of what we receive, the tree will be from the entire Shawsheen School.

You are welcome to contribute in one of two ways:
1.     Buying a gift card that can be used as an act of kindness. We have included a list of ideas below, but feel free to come up with your own!
2.     Making a monetary donation toward a larger gift. We are suggesting monetary donations in the $5.00 range (again, this is strictly optional).
Please send any donations to Shawsheen Elementary in an envelope labeled Festival of Trees by Monday, November 25th so we have enough time to put everything together.

Thank you for your generosity and kindness!

With Appreciation,

The Shawsheen Festival of Trees Committee
