April Updates

Good Afternoon Families,

We have had a such a busy month in April so far filled with exciting school activities in the classrooms and outside of school. The third grade students completed the ELA MCAS testing last week and will have the Math MCAS in May. All grade three classrooms went to the State House Field trip this week and they got to take a tour.

Mrs. Flaherty's class was able to go to the firehouse on Tuesday to accept a 1000 dollar donation from BFIT Bruins foundation. The 1000 dollars worth of recess equipment was donated in the form of street hockey equipment, nets and much more. The firefighters in Wilmington were one of the top fundraising teams in the Bfit challenge at TDBank North this year so we are delighted that they chose the Shawsheen to share this grant with. The students had a wonderful time playing hockey against them!

The First graders will be viewing the Animal habitat program from the Museum of science tomorrow during the day. They are very excited to see in action all that they have been learning about in class.

After vacation week on Tuesday, April 24th the Shawsheen will be doing the Get Fit Walk Around the School for about 20 minutes. This will begin at 2:10. Families are welcome to come and walk with their child or watch from the parking lot.

In May, we have the Ice Cream social on May 10th. The PAC has sent out letters for donations toward the raffle baskets. It is a great evening and Fundraising event for the school. Special guests  will be there to scoop the ice cream!

You may notice that your children are coming home to tell you that they Pawsome. We are rolling out our student recognition system where students can earn Paws for showing respect, resilience and responsibility. So far it has been great!

Also, the STEM fair is tonight at the Middle School. Hoping to see families there.

Thank you everyone and have a wonderful vacation week.

March Updates

Good Morning Families,

Thank you all so much for attending parent/teacher conferences over the past week. I hope that all families were able to reach out to your child's classroom teacher in someway. As you are aware students have been continuing to do reading celebration month here at Shawsheen. To conclude our month of celebrating we are sharing short video clips of teachers talking about books they love. The students did see this at lunches but I promised them I would send the link home for them to re-watch with their families if they wanted to. In addition, I am sending the challenge home to any families that want to create their own flip video. Below are the directions and the link. You would be part of the montage from all other students who complete it. By participating you are giving permission for anyone on the video to be viewed by others. On Thursday, March 29th we will watch the videos that were submitted during lunches.

Updates

Good Morning,

I hope that everyone survived the storm and managed through the power outages over the past day or so. I wanted to send out some upcoming dates and reminders.

As you are aware today is an early release day due to the teachers having a curriculum day in the afternoon. Students will be dismissed at 12:00 noon and no lunches will be served.

In addition, we have started our reading celebration month with the Dr. Seuss themed week and our Mustache bulletin board. We have filled the cafeteria with mustaches of all books that students have recommended to other students. I believe we have over 250 recommendations. Next time you come to the cafe, check it out! Next week during lunches the students will be viewing a montage of videos of all there teachers talking about reading and their favorite books. After that I will be sending out how you can submit a video to the school with your child.

On Wednesday, we will be having our make up for the second grade concert. Information was sent home to families on the concert. We look forward to the performances! Also on Wednesday we are encouraging students to wear blue and white or their shawsheen t-shirts to show Wilmington Pride. If your child has to wear specifics for the concert, they are welcome to bring their t-shirt in for before or after the concert to wear.

Some other upcoming dates:
Report cards will be distributed at the end of the day on Monday, March 19th.

Parent Conferences and early release day are on Thursday, March 22nd

Thank you all and have an enjoyable and safe weekend,

Mrs. King
