Updates-Principal

Dear Shawsheen Families:
Thank you for your continued patience as the Wilmington Public Schools navigates this unprecedented extended school closure in response to the ongoing and ever-changing COVID-19 public health crisis.  As you know, in accordance with an order by Governor Baker issued on Sunday, all K-12 public and private schools in Massachusetts are closed for at least three weeks. I am writing to share information with you specific to:
·        school building access,
·        student enrichment activities,
·        elementary report cards.
SCHOOL BUILDING ACCESS
When our schools were originally closed on March 12, our custodial staff conducted a deep cleaning of high touch surfaces.  Since that time, schools have remained closed to the public in an effort to prevent any contamination of the buildings. As of today, all Wilmington school buildings remain closed to the public and staff (with the exception of administration).  We recognize, however, that a small number of families may have a need to collect personal items that are critical to a student’s daily life activities.  An example of such an item may be reading glasses.  If you find yourself in this situation, please email me at lisa.king@wpsk12.com or Mr. Welch at kevin.welch@wpsk12.com and we will make arrangements to assist you to retrieve the item.  It is important for us to limit building access, so we will only make arrangements in cases where having the item in your possession is absolutely necessary.
STUDENT ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
Many parents have asked if schools will be sending home school work for students to complete during the extended closure. The district believes that it is important for students to continue to practice skills, particularly in literacy and math, while they are out of school.  While we are not planning to provide students with required assignments that represent new learning, we are working on a set of resources that will allow students to practice age-appropriate skills through enrichment activities. These activities will not be required or graded.  Once this document is complete, it will be sent to families. In the meantime, we recommend that families provide a structure for their children at home that includes independent reading, writing, and physical activity. Please be on the lookout for more specific resources in the next few days.
ELEMENTARY REPORT CARDS
Lastly, elementary report cards were scheduled to be sent home this week.  Because of the unexpected extended school closure, these documents are not ready to be distributed.  We will communicate with families when report cards are ready, but you should be prepared for a significant delay in report card distribution.
Thank you for your patience as we sort through this uncharted territory together. Please stay safe and healthy,
Mrs. King
