January News

Good Afternoon Families,

I wanted to update families on some happenings within the school and upcoming events. This past week we had Ooch come in for an enrichment program. He did an engaging presentation on social skills and how to interact with your peers and adults in a positive way. He utilized his Yo Yo skills, sense of humor, music and dance to engage the students and staff. I think everyone really enjoyed it!

The students have just finished their benchmark assessments for the Winter and teachers are currently reviewing that data. We have been very pleased as a school with the growth that students are continuing to make. We have also been working diligently on looking at student work and providing interventions or enrichment for students.

Also, upcoming this week is an early release day for students on Friday. The students will be released at 12:00 noon and no lunches will be served. If there is a change in transportation, please send in a note.

We are continuing to move forward with our PBIS support team at the school. This team is in the process of finalizing a behavior matrix and incentives. Once this is all completed we will share it out to families and introduce it to students. In addition, we are continuing with our third grade student leaders club which meets once a month on Fridays. Recently, they have been helping to be mentors once a week during first grade lunch and both the leaders and the students enjoy this.

On January 31st, there will be a presentation for all parents at the middle school on navigating the cyber world presented by the Middlesex Partnerships for Youth. Please see below for more details.

Lastly, a letter is going home this week to grade three families about the spring MCAS. The dates for the ELA testing are on April 4th, 5th, and 6th and the math are on May 16th and 17th.

Other upcoming dates:

Dental Health Program (grade 1)- 2/8
Vacation Break -2/20 with a return on 2/27
Grade one concert-3/2

Morning Car Rider Procedures

Good Afternoon,

I just wanted to remind families about our drop off procedures in the mornings. Recently, we have had an increase in the amount of cars dropping off and in order to make this an efficient process we encourage families to do the following:

* When dropping off, utilize the two row system. We have a crossing guard on duty from 8:30-8:55 a.m and she is there to be sure the students proceed safely along the crosswalk.

* Your child can get out of the car even if you are 2-3 cars back on either side and walk down the yellow line to the crossing guard and then proceed onto the white crosswalk. This will help with exiting and moving the cars along.

* If you would like to walk your child to the door, you must park in the lot and walk up to the crossing guard and utilize the crosswalk.

* Lastly, any preparation you can do ahead of time to ensure that your child can exit the car efficiently will help move things along.

As always when the buses arrive we do our best to hold up the car riders to let the students get off the buses. No cars are allowed to pass a bus or are allowed to go around it when the lights are flashing or the students are exiting the buses. An administrator is on duty outside to help facilitate this daily.

Thank you all for helping to make his process work more smoothly,

Mrs. King

December Updates

Good Morning,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and holiday break. We had been very busy filling our Thankful Turkeys and this month we will be working on kindness reindeer. Teachers will be adding antlers to the school reindeer when catching students doing kind-full acts. The students have also helped to decorate the Shawsheen Tree for the Festival of Tress this weekend by writing their favorite book or message on the tree.

Coming up in the next week is our parent/teacher conferences on December 8th which is an early release day. All doors will be locked on this day as our CARES program is still going on. Please be sure to use the front door when entering and exiting the building.

Our Shawsheen leaders club has been busy organizing all the lost and found items which are now located on the stage. They have also delivered any clothing with names on it to students or classrooms. Please take a look on the blog for any items that may look familiar. We will be donating the items in the next few weeks if not claimed.

Lastly, we have a Toys for Wilmington Children bin outside the office organized by the Wilmington Fire Department. Students can bring in unwrapped toys or donations up until December 12th.  During parent/teacher conferences would also be a great time to bring these items in. In addition to all the other events we have our second grade concert on December 15th. More information will be sent out to second grade families. We have many events and dates coming up in December, please view the upcoming dates below. You can also view the Shawsheen calendar on our website for events and the Principal's blog for any updates.
